Top Harare Lawyer Advocate Slyvester Munyaradzi Hashiti this Thursday appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Court charged with criminal insult after he allegedly accused a prosecutor of receiving a US$20 000 bribe.
Hashiti is alleged to have is alleged to have said prosecutor Zivanai Macharaga who is attached to the Special Anti Corruption Unit had received a US$20 000 bribe from an accused person.
By consent of the State, Hashiti who appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Crispen Mberewere was granted ZW$10 000 bail coupled with other conditions.
He will be back in court on July 31.
Prosecutor Clement Chimbari alleges that on December 17, 2018, Hashiti was in court representing Francis Kudyanga before Magistrate Vitorino where he applied for the magistrate’s recusal.
Indications are that during his application, Hashiti asked the court to put it on record that Macharaga had received a US$20 000 bribe.
The court heard the statement was published in a local newspaper headlined “Anti-graft prosecutor in bribery storm.”
It is the state’s case the statement was malicious, false and meant to attack Macharaga’s integrity and to impair his dignity.
Meanwhile in a separate case, another top Lawyer Admire Rubaya has appeared in court jointly charged with his wife Miriam Chiba and one Tapiwa Evans Chidemo for money laundering and defeating course of justice.
The trio was granted ZW$5 000 when they also appeared before Magistrate Mberewere.
