Bindura – A group of individuals allegedly gained unauthorised access to restricted areas at Botha Gold Mine on Saturday and removed carbons from the mine’s carbon room, in an incident that unfolded despite an existing High Court order governing the dispute over the operation.
The incident occurred at approximately 12 noon, according to preliminary reports. Security personnel on duty reportedly detected the intrusion and activated internal reporting and escalation procedures. Members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police Support Unit attended the scene after being notified.
Upon the arrival of law enforcement officers, the individuals allegedly fled and were prevented from removing additional material. Police investigations are now underway.
Those named in connection with the incident are Possum Tendayi Mapuranga, Wilbert Muringani (Wils), Leeroy Kambasha, Peter Kambasha, Elias Kambasha, Emmanuel Chiutsi (Manex), Mike Shumba, Godwell Karedza, Joe Mupfupi (ZANU-PF Provincial Secretary for Information & Publicity), Marvellous Nyaunyanga (ZANU-PF Provincial Youth Affairs Secretary), and Francisco Tumozo.
According to information gathered at the scene, the group is alleged to have been led by Mr Mapuranga. It is further claimed that some of the individuals asserted they were acting on behalf of Freda Rebecca Gold Mine. Those claims are expected to form part of the ongoing police inquiry as investigators seek to establish the circumstances and motivations behind the incident.
The development is considered significant given the existence of a High Court order in favour of Botha Gold Mine relating to the ongoing dispute between the two mining entities. Legal observers note that any unilateral action taken while a court directive is in force may raise compliance and governance concerns.
Sources close to the matter also allege that Mr Mapuranga has previously been implicated in two similar incidents. While these claims remain subject to verification, investigators are expected to assess whether there is any pattern relevant to the current case.
Botha Gold Mine management said operations have since returned to normal. The company reiterated its position that all disputes should be resolved strictly within the framework of the law and in accordance with court processes. It also confirmed that additional security measures have been implemented to safeguard assets and prevent further unauthorised access.
No arrests had been confirmed at the time of publication.
Police said investigations are ongoing and further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
