HARARE — CBZ Bank has secured official Sustainability Certification from European and international certifying bodies, a milestone that positions Zimbabwe’s largest financial services group to deepen ESG-aligned lending and investment across the country’s productive sectors.
The accreditation was jointly conferred by the International Council of Sustainability Standards for Value-Driven Financial Institutions and the European Organisation for Sustainable Development (EOSD).
The endorsement follows a comprehensive evaluation of CBZ Bank’s governance frameworks, risk mitigation policies, and capital allocation models. Rather than treating sustainability as a secondary corporate social responsibility (CSR) measure, the audit focused on the institution’s capacity to integrate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles directly into its balance-sheet decisions.
As a primary provider of liquidity in Zimbabwe, CBZ plans to use the certification to anchor long-term economic resilience, attract international development finance, and de-risk lending to local enterprises committed to sustainable practices.
“This certification serves as a foundation rather than a finish line,” CBZ Bank said in a statement. “The true measure of this milestone will be reflected in the resilience of the businesses we finance, the high-impact investments we unlock, and the long-term value delivered to communities and the national economy.”
The bank formally acknowledged the EOSD and the International Council of Sustainability Standards for their collaboration throughout the assessment process, noting that the partnership will continue to inform its sustainability reporting and operational standards moving forward.
