HARARE – Mimosa Mining Company’s Managing Director Fungai Makoni has been appointed president of the Chamber of Mines of Zimbabwe, taking over from Zimasco Chief Executive Officer John Musekiwa.
Makoni served as Second Vice President during Musekiwa’s tenure. His appointment comes at a critical time for the sector as miners navigate currency reforms and efforts to boost beneficiation under the government’s Vision 2030 mining targets.
The new President will guide the Chamber through to 2027. His leadership is expected to focus on policy advocacy, investor confidence, and improving the operating environment for large-scale producers. With Mimosa’s track record in platinum production and community projects, Makoni brings direct operational experience to the lobby group that represents gold, platinum, coal, chrome, and other mineral producers.
The official announcement and handover will be made during the Chamber of Mines Annual General Meeting in Victoria Falls from June 17 to 20 this month. The AGM brings together executives, government officials, and investors to set the sector’s agenda for the coming year.
Musekiwa exits after steering the Chamber through a period of fiscal policy shifts, including the March 2026 directive mandating ZiG payments to local suppliers. The transition signals continuity, with Makoni having worked closely with him on key industry positions.
As Zimbabwe targets US$7 billion in mineral revenue this year, the Chamber under Makoni is expected to push for stable policies, reliable energy and infrastructure that supports growth across the minerals value chain.
