Harare– Local lawyer Freddy Masarirevhu marked the Heroes Holiday with a heartfelt gesture, donating groceries to Bumhudzo Old People’s Home a place he has considered “close to my heart” since leaving college.

Masarirevhu, who has volunteered at the Salvation Army–run institution since 2017, said his contribution was about compassion rather than quantity.

“What I bring might seem small to some, but it’s the love and care behind it that truly matter,” he said.

“Many of the residents here have been forgotten. Some go years without a single visitor. That’s why I believe it’s up to people like me and the wider community to show them they are not alone.”

Established in 1974, Bumhudzo Old People’s Home currently houses 26 elderly residents, including its eldest, 107-year-old Sekuru Ticha. The home’s longest-staying resident has lived there for 26 years.

Resident Gogo Samombe expressed her delight at Masarirevhu’s visit.

“We thought this holiday would pass without anyone coming,” she said with a smile.

“When I saw you, my heart filled with joy. Please don’t stay away too long. Remember, your ambuya and sekuru still need their bread and sugar. The Lord truly blesses us through people like you.”

Major Susan Marere of the Salvation Army thanked Masarirevhu, saying donations like his have a lasting impact.

“These are the kinds of gestures that keep us going,” she said.

“Our elderly spend most of their days quietly basking in the sun, but when we have visitors, it brings warmth and life into their hearts. Acts like this remind them they are valued.”

Last year, Bumhudzo celebrated its 50th anniversary a milestone for a home that continues to serve as a refuge for some of the country’s most vulnerable seniors.
