HARARE –  Mutapa Energy Resources (MER) chief executive officer Innocent Rukweza has been appointed chairman of the Lithium Association of Zimbabwe (LAZ).

The appointment, announced this week, places him at the helm of the country’s leading lithium industry body as the sector experiences rapid growth driven by increasing global demand and government-led value addition initiatives.

He takes over from Xuedong Gong, managing director of Bikita Minerals.

Rukweza will lead the Association in coordinating engagement between lithium producers, investors and government while championing policies aimed at promoting sustainable growth and beneficiation in one of Zimbabwe’s fastest-growing mining sectors.

The appointment comes as Zimbabwe seeks to consolidate its position as a major player in the global lithium market, with several new mines and processing facilities having come on stream since 2021 to supply lithium concentrates and battery-grade materials.

Following his appointment, Mutapa Energy Resources congratulated Rukweza, describing his elevation to the chairmanship as a significant achievement for both the executive and the country’s mining industry.

In a statement, the company’s Board, management and staff said they were proud to see Rukweza assume the leadership of the Association at a time when Zimbabwe’s lithium sector is attracting increased international investment.

The company said it looked forward to working with the Association under Rukweza’s leadership to advance the growth and transformation of Zimbabwe’s lithium value chain.

Rukweza, who heads Mutapa Energy Resources, has built a reputation in the mining sector through his involvement in strategic minerals and his advocacy for beneficiation and sustainable development.

The Lithium Association of Zimbabwe represents producers and other stakeholders in a sector that has expanded rapidly over the past five years, making Zimbabwe one of Africa’s leading lithium producers.
