HARARE – The Embassy of the State of Palestine in Zimbabwe has condemned the interception and detention of international humanitarian activists aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla by Israeli forces, describing the incident as a violation of international law and a reflection of what it called Israel’s escalating policy of intimidation and abuse against pro-Palestinian solidarity missions.

In a strongly worded statement, the embassy criticised Israel’s National Security Minister over remarks and conduct directed at the detained activists, saying the treatment reflected a broader pattern of intimidation, humiliation and repression against those expressing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The flotilla, carrying humanitarian assistance intended for civilians in the besieged Gaza Strip, was reportedly intercepted by Israeli forces while travelling through international waters. Palestinian officials argue that the operation amounted to an illegal seizure of a civilian humanitarian mission and the forced detention of activists from several countries.

Palestinian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Tamer Almassri said the incident exposed what he termed “dangerous and extremist policies” within the current Israeli administration.

“The targeting and humiliation of international solidarity activists demonstrates a deliberate policy aimed at silencing humanitarian voices and preventing support from reaching the Palestinian people,” said Almassri.

According to the embassy, the activists on board included volunteers and human rights campaigners from Europe, the Americas and Africa who had embarked on what was described as a peaceful mission to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, where civilians continue to face worsening humanitarian conditions.

The embassy said the incident offered the international community a glimpse into the daily hardships faced by Palestinians living in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

“If international activists are subjected to such treatment under global attention, the suffering experienced daily by Palestinians under occupation becomes even more alarming,” the statement said.

The Palestinian mission further accused Israel of undermining international legal norms through military operations conducted beyond its territorial waters, while also criticising what it described as growing intolerance toward humanitarian and solidarity efforts.

The embassy called on the international community, human rights organisations and global institutions to take firmer action against Israel over alleged abuses and violations committed against Palestinians and foreign activists.

It urged world governments to move beyond statements of concern and pursue concrete measures, including accountability mechanisms and targeted sanctions against Israeli officials accused of violating international law.

The latest diplomatic condemnation comes amid heightened international scrutiny over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza and increasing global pressure for unrestricted humanitarian access into the territory.

The Palestinian embassy reiterated its appeal for urgent international intervention to protect civilians, uphold international humanitarian law and end what it described as continued suffering endured by the Palestinian people under Israeli occupation.
