The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has with immediate effect suspended all electoral activities that result in huge gatherings.
This follows the new lockdown measure recently announced by the Ministry of Health and Child Care.
In a statement, ZEC chief elections officer Utoile Silaigwana said only the filling of proportional representation seats will continue as part of the new measures.
“The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission wishes to announce that it is suspending with immediate effect all electoral activities that brings groups of people together until further notice,
“In response to the announcement by the Ministry of Health and Child Care for the nation to adopt stringent national COVID-19 measures and the subsequent promulgation of the statutory instrument 10 of 2021,” he said.
ZEC also announced that only a few members of staff will operate from the office in line with the lockdown measures.
“A skeletal staff will keep the Commission’s office open under strict COVID-19 health measures.”
Government last year suspended by-elections which were due on December 5 as part of measures to curb the spread of COVID-19.
