HARARE, Zimbabwe — Bitumen World has announced a strategic restructuring initiative aimed at strengthening its long-term sustainability and preserving its critical role in infrastructure development across the region.

The decision follows mounting challenges in receiving payments for contracted work from one of its largest clients, the Government of Zimbabwe. In a statement, the company said the government is experiencing significant difficulties in settling arrears with contractors.

“The government is facing delays in settling arrears, affecting various projects including road rehabilitation and dam construction,” the company noted.

Although small payments have been made and discussions are underway to establish settlement plans, the financial strain has forced Bitumen World to realign its operations in order to remain resilient in a tough fiscal environment.

“The tragedy of these layoffs,” said CEO Andre Zietsman, “is that they impact the very people who built this prestigious brand — a brand wholly created by Zimbabweans.”

The restructuring reflects the company’s effort to adapt to prevailing economic conditions, particularly cash flow pressures caused by delayed client payments.

Since its inception, Bitumen World has taken a holistic approach to infrastructure development, going beyond the provision of bituminous products, hot asphalt mix, and road rehabilitation. The company has positioned itself as a leader in advancing road safety, easing commutes, and improving travel experiences for road users nationwide.

“Over recent months, we have engaged in extensive discussions and evaluations to guide Bitumen World through this difficult period,” Zietsman explained. “While the decision to restructure was not made lightly, it is essential to safeguard our long-term viability and ensure we continue contributing meaningfully to infrastructure development in Zimbabwe and beyond.”

As part of the restructuring, Bitumen World will adopt a cost-cutting programme that unfortunately includes workforce reductions. Management emphasized that the company deeply values the professionalism and dedication of its employees and is committed to handling the process with respect, transparency, and dignity. Severance packages and transition assistance will be provided to those affected.

“Our priority remains the well-being of our team members and the sustainability of our business,” Zietsman added. “We are grateful for the contributions of our loyal employees and remain dedicated to fostering a positive environment as we move into this new chapter.”

Despite current challenges, Bitumen World has maintained a strong track record of delivering large-scale projects on time and within budget. Established and operated entirely by Zimbabweans, the company has consistently demonstrated its capacity to execute complex projects while upholding high standards of excellence.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to long-term growth, innovation, and the delivery of high-quality infrastructure solutions. Bitumen World pledged to provide regular updates throughout the restructuring process while maintaining its focus on building a resilient future for Zimbabwe’s infrastructure landscape.

Bitumen World also highlighted its achievements, noting that it remains the only construction company in Zimbabwe with four ISO certifications. Recently, it received the SADC Annual Quality Award, a recognition of its unwavering dedication to quality and excellence.

While the restructuring marks a difficult transition, the company expressed optimism that the measures will stabilize operations, protect its core business, and ensure its continued ability to support Zimbabwe’s infrastructure ambitions.

“Bitumen World has always been committed to growth, innovation, and delivering solutions that meet the highest standards,” Zietsman said. “This restructuring is not an end, but the beginning of a more resilient and sustainable future for our company and the country we serve.”
