GABORONE – A Zimbabwean man is among five suspects remanded in custody by the Broadhurst Magistrate Court in Botswana over a suspected cross-border motor vehicle theft syndicate.

Trust Takarinda (22), of Block 7, Mogoditshane, appeared in court on Monday alongside four Batswana nationals – Alex Erikuzanda (21), Ali Erikuzanda (21), both of Moshupa, and Fedelis Zakaria (28) and Gif Kusenguya (28), both of Mmopane Block 1.

Takarinda is jointly charged with Zakaria in connection with the suspected theft of a Honda Fit at Tsolamosese on 3 August 2025. Zakaria is also facing a separate charge with the Erikuzanda brothers over the alleged theft of a Toyota Allex in the same area on 25 June 2025.

According to Botswana police, preliminary investigations have linked the accused to at least 10 other cases of stolen vehicles – all Honda Fit models – reported in Gaborone and nearby southern villages. The vehicles were allegedly taken from malls, churches and entertainment spots. None have been recovered.

The suspects were remanded in prison and are due back in court on 25 August 2025 as investigations continue.

Police have urged the public to be vigilant and report any suspicious activities linked to vehicle sales or movements across borders.
