HARARE – Unki Mine PGM production in the first quarter increased 4% on the comparable year ago period at 50 900 ounces.

According to the first quarter production report from Anglo American, the production was higher than the 49 000 ounces seen in the same period last year but 9% lower than the 55 800oz that were produced in the fourth quarter to December 2020.

PGM includes platinum, palladium, rhodium, iridium, ruthenium and gold.

Unki is the second largest platinum producer in the country.

The mine contributed about 5% of Anglo American’s PGM production of 1.02 million ounces, which was an increase of 7% on last year but a decline of 5% on Q4.

The group said Q1 production was at 95% of normal capacity, meeting strong customer demand despite some limited constraints at certain operations due to Covid-19.

Inclusive of all group resources, Anglo American’s first-quarter production rose 3% year on year with copper showing the biggest improvement.

Anglo American’s portfolio is increasingly tilted towards future-enabling metals and minerals, with our recently proposed demerger of our thermal coal operations in South Africa moving us further in that direction,” Chief Executive Mark Cutifani said in the company’s production statement
