The Zimbabwe National Army Commander General Edzai Chimonyo has died.
According to Presidential Spokesperson George Charamba, Chimonyo was battling cancer for a long time.
“Devastated to announce the passing on of General Chimonyo early this morning after a long fight against cancer. Go well freedom fighter, Commander and Ambassador!,” Charamba said on Twitter.
Chimonyo was also a former Zimbabwean diplomat.
He was appointed ZNA commander after the 2017 ouster of former President Robert Mugabe and subsequent shuffle of the command within the Zimbabwe Defence Forces.
After Mugabe’s ouster, former ZDF commander General Constantino Chiwenga was appointed Vice President while ZNA commander Phillip Valerion Sibanda took over.
Chimonyo was then appointed ZNA commander replacing General Sibanda.
